Periodontal Care
Periodontitis is the gum disease in which the gum and bone become infected by bacteria in residual plaque. The gums become inflamed and break down, forming pockets around the tooth. If left untreated, the tooth may eventually need to be extracted. If you have recently noticed red, swollen, receded, or bleeding gums, persistent bad breath, or changes in your bite, you may have periodontitis.
Fortunately, there are treatments that can curb the progression of the disease and promote healing. Dr. Jacob performs scaling and root planing to treat periodontitis. Scaling removes plaque below the gum line, and root planing smoothes the tooth’s root to prevent buildup and allow gum tissues to heal. Dr. Jacob may also prescribe certain medications to limit infection, and he may refer more severe cases to a periodontal specialist.
Endodontic Therapy
Endodontic dentistry treats diseases of the tooth’s “pulp” (nerves and blood vessels in the center of the tooth) and roots. When this pulp becomes decayed, it can sometimes be removed with root canal therapy, which prolongs the use of a tooth that would otherwise need to be extracted. Alternately, when the pulp is irreversibly damaged (usually by infection, cavities, or injury), an extraction may be a better solution. Dr. Jacob performs bicuspid and forward teeth extractions, and he refers patients needing root canal therapy to esteemed endodontic specialists.
Oral Exams
Oral exams are a crucial diagnostic tool for screening for oral cancer and other problems, checking for asymptomatic oral diseases, monitoring healing, and formulating personalized treatment plans. Dr. Jacob conducts diagnostic oral exams to maintain your complete oral health and provide effective treatment.
